A BREATH OF FRESH AIR ON THE COSTA BRAVA

by T H WHITE on July 1, 2017

In a tribute to the original Fiat 124 Spider, which won the Costa Brava Rally in 1972, a crew from Fiat has driven the latest 124 Spider on a Costa Brava road trip, taking in some of Spain’s most rugged and beautiful coastal scenery.

With the top down and wind in their hair, the Fiat team set out from the city of Girona towards the coast. First stop was the exclusive S’Agaró resort, a Mediterranean gem built at the beginning of the 20th century by architect Rafel Masó and now designated a place of outstanding cultural interest.

Leaving S’Agaró, the Fiat 124 Spider headed out along the coast on the GI-682. This ‘road of 1,000 bends’ emphasised the pleasures of driving the Fiat, both in terms of handling and performance. Credit must go in part to the brilliant four-cylinder 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo engine that delivers 140hp (103 kW) and a peak torque of 240 Nm, available from just 2250 rpm. Rear-wheel drive, near-perfect weight distribution and a low centre of gravity add to the driving dynamics.

Next stop was Tossa de Mar, a beautiful Medieval fishing village near the French border, today frequented by intellectuals and artists. At the end of this road trip, heading back towards Girona, the sweeping bends and smooth tarmac of the GIP-6821 provided a complete contrast to the twisting coast roads, once again demonstrating the dynamic capabilities and sheer driving pleasure offered by the Fiat 124 Spider.

With summer in full swing it’s time you experienced the joys of the Fiat 124 Spider for yourself. Pick a fine day, book a test drive with T H WHITE’s Fiat Group Brand Centre at Hillmead, Swindon, and put the top down. The car awaits, the open road awaits – just call 01793 393524.
