Great news for the Great British Business of Golf

by T H WHITE on August 6, 2025

Our golf industry is experiencing a dynamic period of growth, driven by several key factors:

People still appreciate the game

  • Participation continues to boom: Contrary to some expectations, golf participation rates continue to reach record highs in the UK. May 2025 saw the highest number of World Handicap System scores submitted in England ever, surpassing previous summer months from 2021-2024. Individual clubs are also reporting significant increases in membership, including junior sections.
  • A new era of golfers: Golf is attracting a more diverse and younger audience, shifting from its traditional image as a pastime for older generations. The rise of social media influencers and interactive golf experiences are playing a significant role in this.
  • Women’s golf on the rise: Women’s golf is experiencing a surge in popularity, with the number of women playing golf in the UK tripling during the COVID-19 pandemic alone.
  • Casual play drives growth: General play, including casual and non-competition rounds, saw a significant increase in 2024, demonstrating a valuable opportunity for clubs to adapt and thrive.

Holidaymakers are a welcome addition

The golf industry significantly contributes to the UK economy, with consumer spending estimated at £5.1 billion in 2019. Golf tourism is also projected to grow, with the market expected to reach USD 6.9 billion by 2035. This growth is supported by historical courses, destination resorts, and their appeal to both domestic and international visitors. Many UK courses are being modernised to improve facilities. Primary revenue streams for golf courses include membership and green fees, food and beverage sales, and pro shop sales, with average green fee income for a UK club being £164k in 2023.

Technology’s transformative impact

Technology is enhancing golf through smart sensors, advanced analytics, and equipment. VR, AR, and simulators are making practice more accessible and enjoyable. Wearable devices provide real-time tracking, while AI and interactive mapping help players improve. The equipment market is evolving with AI-powered clubs, personalised options, and aerodynamic balls. Courses are using technology for irrigation, turf monitoring, and GPS carts. Indoor golf is also growing in popularity, offering year-round access and feedback.

Embracing sustainability

Golf courses are increasingly adopting eco-friendly practices such as water-efficient irrigation, solar panels, and organic fertilizers. The UK’s Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) mandate, effective since February 2024, requires new developments to improve the natural environment. Some UK courses like Royal Liverpool and Berkhamsted are demonstrating leadership in environmentally conscious practices.

Other emerging trends and opportunities

Emerging trends include a focus on social golfing experiences with high-tech simulators and ball tracking. Corporate golf tourism is also being recognized for team-building and networking. Clubs are offering flexible membership options to attract casual players. Investment in technology for booking and catering to different skill levels is also ongoing. There is also a rising trend in demand for golf club-branded alcohol.

The UK golf industry is experiencing a flourishing period. At T H WHITE, we are delighted to support Golf’s exciting expansion and upcoming opportunities with new technologies that offer new experiences for British golfers.
