T H White Grasscare has recently supplied a Wiedenmann Greens Terra Spike aerator to Great Barr Golf Club near Birmingham.
The course is renowned for its excellent condition and the club is committed to the continuous improvement of the playing surfaces for the benefit of members and visitors.
In the past the Club has hired machines for aeration, but when a decision was taken to purchase the club's own machine, acting head greenkeeper Chris Stiligoe arranged for demonstrations from the leading manufacturers. Having been a senior greenkeeper at the Belfry for 10 years, he also contacted his former colleagues and canvassed their opinions.
The decision to select the Greens Terra Spike was unanimous. The machine features a
compact design, ideal for use on fine turf, while other significant plus points are the build quality, the simple tine retention system and the simplicity of setting the depth and heave.
Commenting on the decision Chris said, “We purchased the G160 version, which has a 1.6 metre working width and can penetrate down to 30cm, because it is easy to adjust and has very good anti-vibration systems. It’s also robust and dependable and, although predominantly a greens machine, we will also be using it on our fairways at the beginning and end of the season using the 18mm diameter solid tines.
“On the greens we’ve hollow cored using the 16mm diameter tines, then top dressed to infill the holes, firmed up the surface and improved the infiltration rate into the rootzone.”
Great aerator for Great Barr
