A new 6,000t on-floor grain storage facility, designed and constructed by our Materials Handling Division for the Charborough Estate in Dorset, has been built with careful thought for the future. From the outset our engineers have worked closely with both the Estate and their contract farm managers, Velcourt Ltd, to ensure this bespoke design has incorporated maximum flexibility into its specification.

Inclusive approach
Jason Bowerman, the Estate’s resident Land Agent who manages the Drax family estate, is certainly impressed with the inclusive approach taken by T H White. He explained, “Since they were selected, the team from T H White has worked ceaselessly with us to incorporate our practical requirements, drawing upon both their experience and the latest technology. We believe we now have a top quality asset to take the farm forward in these times of global uncertainty.”

The advanced on-farm facility incorporates an oversized intake pit coupled to a high capacity conveying and aspiration pre-cleaning intake system. The ‘tip and go’ system is designed to ensure a fast turn around of trailers, while the process system which is controlled by a central control panel requires limited input once routes and equipment are set up by the operator.

With a high capacity dryer, and fine cleaner, as well as direct out-load, temporary storage, and recirculation routes incorporated into a single plant area, the facility is capable of efficiently delivering a wide range of grain processing and storage options to the operator.

Environmental considerations
Of course, careful consideration has been given to the ‘fit’ of the facility in the surrounding landscape and both the siting of the plant and the neatly contained design minimises the visual impact in this beautiful part of the country. Importantly, the facility has also been designed to contribute in other ways to the Estate’s activities. With added features that both support the efficiency of the Estate’s general farm operations as well as their responsible approach towards the environment, the store is set to become central to their activities all year round.

For example, the ability to harvest and store rainwater for use on the Estate, as well as the option to use the grain dryer’s fully bunded fuel tank to fill other farm equipment, are features that are certainly expected to be well used to reduce both water supply consumption and downtime in road movements for farm equipment.

Major re-investment
Jason Bowerman and his team are delighted to have practical completion of their new store in time for this year’s harvest. He explained that at a time when farm input costs are otherwise escalating, “this is a major re-investment for the Estate. It will enable us to address the increasingly stringent storage requirements whilst providing for greater marketing flexibility. The facility will also significantly reduce road movements and fuel usage.”

Certainly, taking the time to properly develop the project from an early stage by involving a reputable, independent company such as T H White that is able to provide impartial advice while adopting an inclusive team approach, is the best way to future-proof your investment.
